PITTSBURGH RELEASE: LOCAL GROUP JOINS NATIONWIDE DAY OF ACTION TO CALL FOR GREEN JOBS NOW

Pittsburgh residents, local businesses and non-profits will gather at Whitfield and Penn in East Liberty at 9:30am

Sep 26, 2008

Pittsburgh, PA – On Saturday September 27, Pittsburgh residents will join tens of thousands of concerned citizens across the country for a national day of service and action.  People from all walks of life will stage hundreds of grassroots events throughout the country.  They will demonstrate to Congress and Presidential candidates that people are ready to build an inclusive green economy, strong enough to lift people out of poverty and curb climate change.

The event is part of "Green Jobs Now – A Day To Build The New Economy," one of the largest days of citizen action focusing on economic issues and global warming in our nation's history.
In Pittsburgh, the event will feature three unique project sites, 1.) a bioenergy harvest, biofuel production workshop with a BBQ in Larimer, another, focusing on Food harvest, garden tours, and urban agricultural and nutritional workshops at Healcrest Farm, and educational tabling and workshops, in addition to “I am Ready” petitioning at the E. Liberty Church.

Participants in the event will create a visual display of their message: "We're Ready For Green Jobs Now!"  Event organizers will collect petition signatures urging elected officials to invest in millions of green jobs and a Clean Energy Corps to repower America.  This petition will be delivered to Washington, DC along with petitions from hundreds of other events across the country.  Members of Congress and the Presidential candidates will be able to see for themselves that their constituents are demanding bold action.

"This is the single most important work of our generation.” States Vanessa German, co-host of the evnet.” I believe that this is the work of true opportunity for all human beings, regardless of race or class, to live in communities that allow the whole person to thrive, to do dignified, important work that contributes to the betterment of the family and the planet. That so many people and organizations in Pittsburgh are dedicated to this work is testament to the power of this new inclusive Green Economy to bring hope, and promise to people and places once thought to be too rusty and forgetful to be worthwhile."

“Clearly, the time is right for the convergence of economic development through environmental prosperity” states Andrew Butcher, CEO of Growth Through Energy & Community Health (GTECH) and co-host of the day’s events.  “This event is proof that wide spread collaboration based on inclusion, innovation, and progress is possible and that Pittsburgh is ready for green jobs.”
Growth Through Energy & Community Health (GTECH) Strategies facilitates and implements innovative green strategies for vacant land management. As a Pennsylvania not-for-profit organization founded in April 2007, GTECH incorporates environmental stewardship and community development into a social enterprise targeting economic, social and environmental impacts and returns.

Steel City Biofuels, also an event co-host is a program of Penn State, and has been working within the region for three years dedicated to building the awareness, policy, technology and infrastructure necessary for the sustainable production and use of biofuels in Southwestern Pennsylvania. SCB offers educational programs, consultation and training based around the production and use of biofuels.

Green Jobs Now is a non-profit, non-partisan project of Green for All, 1Sky, and the We Campaign to promote an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty and solve the climate crisis.  For more information, see http://events.greenjobsnow.com/greenforall/events/show/7500
